DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 8\n11:30am – Immediately following services\nZiegler Hall\n\nRegister here. \nJonathan Curran came to Israel at age 18 and enlisted in the IDF where he joined an elite military unit responsible for targeted strikes against Israel’s enemies. After completing his 3-year mandatory service\, he served in the Shabaq (Israel’s FBI) and is currently registered for miluim service. Since October 7th\, Jonathan has served in the North defending the country and has been in Gaza several times. Jonathan started playing football in Israel after he left the military in 2010. He first played for a Tel Aviv team and now plays for the Ramat HaSharon Hammers. He played with the national flag football team in Israel’s first-ever international competition in Spain in 2014 and then again in 2023 in Ireland where Team Israel took 3rd place. Jonathan has played many positions\, including QB\, receiver\, corner\, safety\, punter\, and kicker. Jonathan lives in Israel and is married with two kids. “I am proud to serve Israel in every way possible\,” Jonathan says\, “not just in football and the military\, but in every way I can.”

DESCRIPTION:Throughout COVID\, wars\, and circles of violence\, and amidst one of the worst geopolitical crises the world has faced for decades\, Israel fails – times and again – in maintaining political stability. In this session\, we’ll discuss the pulling forces that are tearing Israeli society apart and are reflected in its current political crisis: in Judaism – conservativism vs. liberalism\, and in Israeliness – inclusiveness vs. exclusiveness. \nDr. Masua Sagiv is Scholar in Residence of the Shalom Hartman Institute based in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Koret Visiting Assistant Professor of Jewish and Israel Studies at U.C. Berkeley. She was most recently the Academic Director of the Menomadin Center for Jewish and Democratic Law at Bar-Ilan University and a research fellow at the Kogod Research Center of the Shalom Hartman Institute. \nMasua earned her LL.B. in Law and Political Science (magna cum laude) from Bar-Ilan University\, her LL.M. (with honors) from Columbia University School of Law\, and her Ph.D. in law from Tel-Aviv University. Her research areas focus on the intersection between law\, religion\, gender and state\, as well as law and social change and Jewish peoplehood. \nThis is an in-person event.
