V’ahavta l’reicha Kamocha- Love your neighbor (friend) as yourself. Aside from many other laws and commandments, we find this wisdom in Parashat Kedoshim, known as the “holiness code”. We are also taught in this portion that the reason to love our neighbors, is that human beings are made “Betzelem Elohim” in the image of God, therefore we are obligated to see the “Godliness” that exists in each person that we come across in our lives, especially in the classroom. First and foremost, I want my students to be “mensches”. As Rabbi Hillel replied, when asked to teach a student all of torah: “what is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor- that is the whole of Torah; the rest is commentary- go and study it!
