RABBI JASON FRUITHANDLER
The value I find myself more and more identifying with was taught to us by Hillel. He was a rabbi before there were rabbis and he spent most of his days disagreeing with the other great sages of his age. Hillel taught “al tifrosh min hatzibur.” “Do not separate yourself from the community.” To me this idea means that I must cultivate a safe space for questions, exploration, and disagreement. I think community means that the people who you love most in the world surround you and support you as you travel on your own journey. I see my work as a rabbi and educator as essential for encouraging and fostering an environment in which we all feel responsible for each other.
