A Bisl Torah

You are Essential

I was taking a walk and out of the blue, a congregant on the other side of the street called out, “You know, you’re essential, right? Thank you for what you do.” His words shook me.

“You are essential.”

And while I know he was speaking about my “work” as a rabbi, I don’t think he realized that his message speaks to the core of every human being. God created us to be essential. To give back and be partners in the ongoing creation and evolution of this world.

Even in a time in which we are isolated and for many, alone, God needs us now more than ever. To reach out. To give back. To be patient. To be kind. To know how much we matter.

You are essential. Wherever you are, you are essential. Alone in your home. Together, with your families. Secluded and isolated, you are essential. God needs you.

Genesis reminds us that each human was created in the image of God. Sforno, the Italian commentator explains that humankind was built with a spiritual core. That although our bodies age, often, our intellect improves, and souls grow with compassion and sensitivity. Our abilities to connect with the universe remain limitless.

In other words, if we realize how essential we are, every act of kindness, every message of love brings God closer to the people in need. Closer to those feeling the absence of order, stability and light.

One person can impact this world. Ask yourself, right now, how will you serve as God’s messenger during this pivotal moment?

You are essential and today, God needs you more than ever.

Shabbat Shalom
