Rabbi Erez Sherman
Rabbi Erez Sherman was ordained from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in May 2009, where he was awarded the United Synagogue Award for Congregational Service. He is also a graduate of Albert A. List College and Columbia University (with degrees in Music and Talmud), where he wrote his thesis, “Music in the Synagogue in the 21st Century.” From 2009-2014, Rabbi Sherman served as Assistant Rabbi of Shomrei Torah Synagogue in West Hills, CA. There, he created the Israel Ambassador Program, enhanced Israel advocacy for teens and adults, and doubled the size of the congregation’s AIPAC delegation.
Since July 2014, Rabbi Sherman has served as a rabbi at Sinai Temple, where he creates membership engagement opportunities and builds deep, meaningful relationships throughout the synagogue and school communities. As the Men’s Club rabbi, he has been a guiding presence in attracting new members and emphasizing the importance of discussion of relevant topics, as well as connection and fellowship. Rabbi Sherman also oversees the Sinai Temple Israel Center and Nazarian Youth Program. The Israel Center engages the Sinai Temple and Los Angeles community in Israel education and advocacy through speakers, classes, trips, and programs.
Rabbi Sherman loves working with the special needs community. He has lectured around the U.S. on “Inclusion of Those with Disabilities In the Jewish Community” and volunteered with the Conservative movement’s B’nai Mitzvah program for those with special needs in Jerusalem. Rabbi Sherman created the KEEN (Kids Enjoying Exercise Now) Basketball Clinic for special needs children and the Sinai Temple Basketball Camp. His late brother, Eyal z’l, was a quadriplegic for 32 years and gave hope to thousands of people around the world. Eyal’s life shapes Rabbi Sherman’s work today.
The son of Rabbi Charles and Leah Sherman, Rabbi Sherman is a native of Syracuse, NY and comes from a family of rabbis. His father serves as Rabbi of Melrose B’nai Israel Emanu-El in Philadelphia, PA. His sister, Rabbi Nogah Marshall, serves as the Education Director of Congregation Beth El in Voorhees, NJ. Rabbi Sherman is married to Rabbi Nicole Guzik of Sinai Temple. They work hand-in-hand to foster a warm, welcoming synagogue family, alongside their energetic children Annie, Zachary and Henry.
