Musicologist Eric Werner observed, “The Jews consider themselves a particularly musical people.” In Jewish communities throughout the world, music helps to define individual and collective identity, express emotions, articulate values, and clarify shared concerns. This course surveys Jewish music of diverse locations, movements, and historical periods. Through a variety of listening examples and the tools of ethnomusicology, it is designed to enhance listening enjoyment, appreciation, and knowledge.
