Wonders of the World
One of the first prayers our children learn is Mi Chamocha, who is like you God? The Israelites recited these words as they crossed the sea. Each Wednesday morning, at our Douglas Family ECC Mini-Minyan, the students and parents alike jump with joy as they sing, oseh fele! God who works wonders!
The medieval commentator Ibn Ezra explains that human beings are often afraid to praise God’s name because it is impossible to recite all of God’s praises. In other words, there is too much praise to give that we do not want to miss out. And yet, we are obligated to praise God because of the wonders God performs.
So many times in our live we are paralyzed by fear. We worry what can go wrong, and that stops us from pursuing dreams. However, Ibn Ezra permits us to think differently. Imagine if what was preventing us from moving forward were the multitude of good things to come in the future. Yes, we do not know what tomorrow, next week, or next year will bring. But we do know that through all the difficult moments we continue to live through in our world, there are also wonderful moments that we cannot miss out on. Tomorrow when we read these words from the Torah, we will rise. When we hear Mi Chamocha, let us feel the elation that our youngest project when they shout oseh fele, let’s celebrate the wonders of the world.
