RUSSELL COHEN

4TH GRADE TEACHING ASSISTANT

My name is Russell Cohen, and this is my third year teaching 5th Grade at Sinai Temple.  A year that was very important to me was 2008.  This was the year of my Bar Mitzvah, when I deepened my connection to Judaism and studied hard to learn much of the service and more about the religion in general.  This was also the year of my first trip to Israel, which was an important and exciting experience, as I got to see so many places that I had only previously heard about in Hebrew School.  I also finished creating my first movie that year, sparking an interest in filmmaking that has been my passion ever since and brought me to Los Angeles, and I spent my first summer as a camp counselor and started working with my first Bar Mitzvah student in the months following, beginning my experience working with kids.  All of these events took place during the Hebrew year 5768.  If you add up those numbers, the sum is 26, which is 2 x 13.  13 is of course the age at which one traditionally has a Bar Mitzvah, and, through all those meaningful events, the year was one when I doubly reaffirmed my connection to the Jewish people.  I’m excited to continue working with young people and helping them learn more about our customs, beliefs, and history in the year ahead.
