When I ask students and colleagues what their wish for the new year is, they all answer unanimously: “I wish to go back to school!” To be honest, this is also my wish for the new year. I miss the days when I welcomed my students to class with a hug, when I put my arm on their shoulders reassuring them that I am with them no matter what. I miss the times when I could sit close to a student and challenge him/her to read a Hebrew paragraph. Not only have we learned how important our community is to us, we also understand how important we are to our community. Hillel the elder, who lived in Babylonia and Jerusalem during the first century BCE, said “Al Tifrosh Min Hatzibur”: “Do not separate yourself from the community.” I pray to see you all very soon in Kohn Chapel, praying together as one big community.
