5TH GRADE TEACHER
My name is Maggie Boyles and I am teaching a 5th grade Hebrew pod and co-teaching 5th grade religious school. The date that is important to me is the date of my birth, 8 Tishrei 5752. This date is important to me because 5752 is a leap year—a Pregnant Year—on the Hebrew calendar. During a Pregnant Year, we add an extra month—Adar II—unlike the Gregorian calendar on which only an extra day is added. Adar is considered a lucky month and Pregnant Years are considered times of great change. A few months after my birth, on 19 Tevet 5752, the Soviet Union dissolved. After this, Soviet Jews were finally able to make Aliyah to Eretz Israel. Over 1 million Jews came to Israel following the USSR’s dissolution. It is interesting to map the convergence of moments of great political and social change with the occurrence of a Pregnant Year. You can use the website TorahCalc.com to check what years are Pregnant Years.
