Sinai Successes

Hoops in the Holy Land

On Sunday, February 10, all-star basketball player David Blu joined the Sinai Temple community and Rabbi Erez Sherman for a conversation about Jewish identity, determination and mindset in professional and competitive sports. David, a Maccabi Tel Aviv champ, is an LA native who was born to an African American father and a Jewish mother. He has two rules in life, “Be happy and be humble.”

Playing around the world and specifically in Israel,  David witnessed “a country surrounded by enemies, [where] basketball was a way to bring people together.” This experience provided him with great perspective and a strong sense of Jewish identity. David’s passion for imparting knowledge and inspiration to the next generation was beyond evident throughout the day’s program. Following his discussion with Rabbi Sherman, the all-star joined Sinai kids on the court for some dribbling, dunking and fun. A special thanks to our generous event hosts Nora and Mois Refoua for making this afternoon possible.

To learn more about our multi-facetted basketball programming, instilling skills and values on and off the court, please contact Rabbi Erez Sherman at [email protected].
