My heart has always held a special place for animals and I never imagined they’d be a prominent part of my life during the 2020 lockdowns. Given that my family and I had been safely quarantining at home and school was out, we had the gift of time on our hands and decided to do our part in helping our local community by fostering two kittens. Gracie was two months when we began fostering her and is now thriving in her forever home, and Julian was just two weeks old when he came to our home and watching him blossom…

I believe that one of the major silver linings of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it has brought people closer to each other. Although the physical distancing is observed and practiced, people have become closer to one another spiritually and mentally. They care for one another and relate to each other’s needs, and they try to be as helpful as possible. Grownups have naturally passed this phenomenon on to their children. As a Judaic educator, I relate to this marvel as a Jewish value: “Love thy neighbor like yourself.” I can see that children are more affectionate and loving towards…

During this pandemic, I’ve had more time to reflect and educate myself. I have read many books and taken many walks, and explored new ways to teach our students online. I’ve learned much about technology that I never knew before, and I appreciate this chance to learn new skills along with our students at the Religious School!

My silver linings during this pandemic are the values of independence, creativity and technology. I have seen tremendous growth in my students’ abilities to manage themselves and their time. I have had the opportunity to provide engaging lessons that allow all students to be successful. We have also all discovered how learning can be done through technology, new platforms and new games.

In choir, it is my hope that the kids embrace this message of respecting one another, as we ourselves would like to be respected. In working together as an ensemble, as a team, we want to be inspired by one another, pay close attention to one another, and be happy with each other’s successes.  Only then, can we sing and inspire as one!

During the High Holy Days, one of the prayers we chant is the “Sh’ma Koleinu”: Hear Our Voice.  In this prayer, there is a line which begins “Al tashlicheinu l’eit ziknah”; do not cast off your old.  For the last couple of months, I have been working on transitioning my parents in to assisted living.  While I do this work with love and care, I can’t help but have compassion for others in the new community my parents are now living in.  On any given day when I am there, I go out of my way to do something helpful…

The silver lining during the pandemic has been having the opportunity to become closer to my community. Each day, I virtually welcome congregants and students into my home; we communicate not only through emails and calls but also texts. We are all in this new reality together which gives us each a stronger sense of belonging to something greater than ourselves. We use new technology during class which enables a wider toolbox to help teach the texts and melodies of our tradition. Most notably, we now are able to stream our Shabbat and holiday services around the globe so that…

March 13th, 2020, the clergy at Sinai Temple took our smart phones home and started to create a virtual community. At first, it felt strange, yet as days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months, we felt more and more connected. Families celebrated joyous times on Zoom and YouTube. The greater world had an opportunity to see the magical spiritual community of Sinai Temple. While in years past, you brought your Judaism to our walls, over these last months, we have brought the community to you. From drive bys at your homes and socially distant programs, the venues may…
