Sinai Temple offers the opportunity to honor the loving memory of departed family members or close friends by having his or her name inscribed on a Memorial Plaque placed on a beautiful Memorial Wall in Ziegler Sanctuary. The memorial plaque will be lit on the Yahrzeit and Yizkor days with Kadish recited on the respective Shabbat. A Yahrzeit notification will be sent to you for the Yahrzeit and your loved ones name will be listed in perpetual memorial in our annual Book of Remembrance distributed on Yom Kippur. We invite you to participate in the dedication of memorial plaques to…

My Silver lining is letting my hair grow out to SILVER. When everything closed down back in March, I felt that growing my hair out was symbolic of empathizing with everyone during the pandemic. I wanted to be proud of wearing a mask and social distancing. I want to be a big part of keeping this pandemic at bay. As many Jews pick their sect, I wanted to pick “Being COVID-safe,” which to me means staying safe for everyone’s sake. These last months have been about helping neighbors, staying in touch with friends and family, and creating a special program…

During this global pandemic, we are unable to live our regular life. We must adjust to a new kind of life, in many ways. But, I am lucky to have eyes and a heart that always try to see the good side. Currently (although I miss so much seeing those amazing, smart, funny students whom I love to love) I find that not needing to drive to school is actually a great change. The traffic that filled our Los Angeles roads is more bearable now. It is more peaceful on the street. I wish it will remain like this, in…

My name is Tirza Volkmar and I am the 3rd grade teacher here at Sinai Temple. I have been a teacher for the last twenty six years and enjoyed every minute of it! For the past 17 years I have taught at Harkham Hillel Hebrew Academy and the last 9 years, I have taught at Sinai Temple. My love for teaching started at young age and has been my true passion. Having the opportunity to witness children grow and develop is an absolute priviledge. Being able to instill in them the importance of the land of Israel is very important to…

My heart has always held a special place for animals and I never imagined they’d be a prominent part of my life during the 2020 lockdowns. Given that my family and I had been safely quarantining at home and school was out, we had the gift of time on our hands and decided to do our part in helping our local community by fostering two kittens. Gracie was two months when we began fostering her and is now thriving in her forever home, and Julian was just two weeks old when he came to our home and watching him blossom…

I believe that one of the major silver linings of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it has brought people closer to each other. Although the physical distancing is observed and practiced, people have become closer to one another spiritually and mentally. They care for one another and relate to each other’s needs, and they try to be as helpful as possible. Grownups have naturally passed this phenomenon on to their children. As a Judaic educator, I relate to this marvel as a Jewish value: “Love thy neighbor like yourself.” I can see that children are more affectionate and loving towards…

During this pandemic, I’ve had more time to reflect and educate myself. I have read many books and taken many walks, and explored new ways to teach our students online. I’ve learned much about technology that I never knew before, and I appreciate this chance to learn new skills along with our students at the Religious School!

My silver linings during this pandemic are the values of independence, creativity and technology. I have seen tremendous growth in my students’ abilities to manage themselves and their time. I have had the opportunity to provide engaging lessons that allow all students to be successful. We have also all discovered how learning can be done through technology, new platforms and new games.
